Hard Conversations Guide
Respectful, practical ways to talk with your parent or loved one about changing needs, matched to how your conversations usually go.
What's inside
An approach that fits you
Five versions, from “we talk openly” to “I haven't raised it yet” or “I'm not sure how”.
Scripts for your concern
Written for your most recent top priority, or any topic you choose.
Opening the conversation
Gentle openings, and how to raise a concern without blame.
Respecting independence
How to ask without taking over, and what to do if they disagree.
Involving family
Fits your family, whether you're a spouse, an only child, a friend or one of many.
A preparation worksheet
Fill it in on screen or on paper before you talk.
How it's personalized
If you've made a free Family Support Map, it uses your most recent answers, so there's nothing more to fill in. If not, you'll answer a few short questions first, and get a free Map too. It uses your loved one's first name, and never their address.
What it isn't
It's practical help for talking together. It isn't therapy, mediation, legal advice or an assessment of anyone's ability to make decisions, and it never suggests overriding your loved one's choices. If anyone is in immediate danger, call 911.
